Charlette May Booth
Busick Thompson: Charlette
went to be with the Lord on Sunday afternoon August 7, 2011. Waiting
for her by the Rainbow Bridge were Tillie her first childhood dog, a
fox terrier, then the rest of her beloved dogs, all Dalmatians.
Charlette was known by most who knew her as the Dalmatian Lady of
Phoenix. She was a charter member of the Dalmatian Club of Greater
Phoenix, active in Kachina Kennel Club, and was a life member of the
Phoenix Field and Obedience Club. Her love of Dalmatians went far
beyond her own breeding. Hundreds of valley hospitals and nursing
homes were visited by Copper, Perdi, Sally, Queenie and others.
Charlette was a member of the task force that formed the Organization
of Companion Animal Associations and was the first scheduler for a
busy lineup of visits. All the while, she bred, trained, and showed
seven dogs to their Companion Dog degrees and four to their AKC
championship since 1969. She sold far more pups to enthusiastic
owners who returned for more of her well-loved dogs. She also taught
Obedience (all breeds) for Petsmart and for the Phoenix Parks and
Recreation department. She had another life as well. Many weddings,
birthdays, showers, school events, and anniversaries were graced by
the cakes she baked and decorated. She made gourmet red velvet cakes
years before they became the current rage.
Charlette was a graduate of the White Cross Hospital RN program (1947)
in Columbus Ohio and practiced her profession for the next sixty-one
years. She found it too hard to retire and not be helping someone.
She had a variety of positions: hospital, industrial, school nurse,
doctors’ nurse, nursing home supervisor, and private duty nursing (she
came to Arizona on one such assignment in mid-winter and ended up
moving to the Valley). For those who were gifted to be in her care,
she was known as the Angel lady, even if their family got one of her
dogs. Charlette was preceded in death by
her beloved son Charles and by her first husband (Robert J Busick) and
her second husband (Vernal Thompson). She is survived by daughter,
Beth (Peter) Nick, two grandsons, David C. and Capt. Douglas R. Nick,
two great grandchildren, Aniyah G. Nick and Joseph D. Nick, a nephew,
a niece, one step-son, two step-grandsons, four step-great
grandchildren and two grand nieces. Her kindness, diligence to duty,
loving acts to those in her care and those who recently provided her
care, and her love of animals as well as people will be Charlette’s
best memorial and remembrance. A memorial service will be held
Saturday August 27 at 1:00 PM at First Presbyterian Church of Sun
City, 12225 N. 103rd Avenue in Sun City. The family can be contacted

Charlene Joyce Sutherland Mason,
age 73, of Marengo died, Thursday morning, October 7,
2010 at her residence. She was born on March 3, 1937 in
Haysi, Virginia the daughter of the late Victor and
Hazel (Owens) Sutherland. In response to an opportunity
for a better life for their children, Mr. and Mrs.
Sutherland moved their family from the coal mines of
Virginia to Morrow County after a short stop in
Michigan. They settled in the Marengo area and Joyce has
been there ever since. She graduated from Marengo High
School in the class of 1954. After high school she began
her journey with Morrow County Hospital; a career that
would span over forty five years. It all started as a
candy striper when she realized her calling to help
people in the health care field. She eventually put
herself through school to obtain her certification as a
registered nurse, graduating in
1958 from White Cross/Riverside in Columbus. In
1969, Joyce went back to school to further her education
at The Ohio State University to become certified as a
Registered Nurse Anesthetist (CRNA). She retired from
the Morrow County Hospital in May of 2001. On July 3,
1958 Joyce married Marvin Mason at the Marengo United
Methodist Church where they were both members. Together
they owned and operated Mason Farms Ltd. They truly knew
the definition of hard work; she had her
responsibilities as a nurse and he had his as the
elementary school principal. Even after Marvin’s death
in 1982, Joyce continued to operate the farm with her
children as it exists today. Starting in March of 1989,
she served 5 terms on the Morrow County Board of Health,
which spanned 20 years. In 2004 she became an advisor
for the Morrow County Board Farm Service Agency-County
Committee. Joyce loved sports and was an avid fan of the
Ohio State Buckeyes and the Highland “Fighting” Scots.
She knew her sports very well, and was known to
occasionally voice her opinion when necessary to correct
officiating calls. She did not take the role of
grandmother lightly and always knew what her grandkids
were up to, rarely missing their events. She was very
proud of her degree from The Ohio State University and
was so happy that all of her kids went on to graduate as
well from The Ohio State University. Joyce will be
missed by her four children and their spouses, Teresa
“Terri” Miller and her husband Kurt of Marengo, Mark
Mason and his wife Kimberly of Westerville, Julie Zuber
and her husband Michael of Sunbury, and Jon Mason and
his wife Tonya of Marengo; her grandchildren Shawn (Josh
Amer), Eric, and Kylene Miller, Joshua, Zachary, Jacob,
and Andrew Mason, Ethan, and Samantha Zuber, Kayla,
Trent, and Alex Mason; and her brothers Robert
Sutherland of Marengo and Jimmy Sutherland of
Evansville, Indiana. Friends may call on the family on

Hello, I would like to pass on the news that
Margaret
Weaver Berger passed away November 1, 2005 of a massive stroke at 93
years of age. She died peacefully at Knox Memorial Hospital in Mt.
Vernon, OH. She was a graduate from the class of
1933, and had attended
her 70th year reunion in 2003 with me, Betsy Berger Taurman, who
graduated in 1963. She was the only one in attendance from her class.
Among her possessions we have found her cape and cap that she dearly
loved. Would there be an interest from the Alumni Association to display
them with the other historical items? I would be happy to mail them if
so. Thank you,
Betsy Taurman, 2316 W. Lagoon Court, Mequon, WI 53092, (262)-242-0137
