RWC School History Through the Years

1892

Protestant Hospital opens at Third Avenue and Dennison.

1892

Columbus Training Hospital - 5 year program.

1894

First class of five students graduates from Protestant Hospital Nursing School / Columbus Training Hospital.

1898

Columbus Training Hospital becomes Protestant Hospital - opposite Goodale Park on Park Street - adjacent to Ohio Medical University.

1913

Training shortened to 3 years - affiliated with Ohio State University Hospital until 1922.

1922

Protestant Hospital joins the Ohio Methodist Episcopal Conference. Name changed to White Cross Hospital. Had graduated 341 nurses by 1922.

1930

Affiliated with Children's Hospital and could attend Ohio Wesleyan for 2 years to receive a degree in nursing.

1941

179 students enrolled in the Cadet Nursing Program.

1942

Alumni presented Service Flag with a star for each nurse in the service - Placed in the Lobby.

1947

Hospital purchases land at West North Broadway and Olentangy River Road for new hospital. Plans call for initial 125 bed maternity hospital with more units to be built if fund raising is successful.

1954

Alumni established a yearly $500 Scholarship Fund for a needy student.

1955

Added affiliation with Benjamin Franklin Hospital.

1961

White Cross Hospital moves to current Riverside Methodist Hospital site at corner of West North Broadway and Olentangy River Road. Name changed to Riverside Methodist Hospital. School of Nursing becomes Riverside- White Cross School of Nursing and affiliates with Ohio Northern University. Average number of yearly graduates 50 - 75.

1964

School of Nursing affiliated with Ohio Northern completion program until 1975.

1973

Becomes the Riverside Methodist School of Nursing.

1975

Riverside Methodist School of Nursing affiliates with and moves to Ohio Wesleyan University.

1977

Last graduating class of Riverside Methodist Hospital School of Nursing.

1979

Becomes the Riverside - Ohio Wesleyan School of Nursing.

1994

Ohio Wesleyan School of Nursing closes.
