FROM
THE PRESIDENT'S CORNER
Greetings to all!
I want to update you on the "Spirit"
Sculpture Campaign - $43,000.00 has been gifted to date, with about
$22,500.00 being given by Alumni Nurses. How wonderful – and a
"special Thank you" to all.
I presented an overview of our campaign to the
Riverside Medical Staff at a recent Medical Grand Rounds meeting, and I do
believe that the presentation was successful as we have received some very
positive feedback. Also, individual letters to both current physicians and
retired Medical Staff Members will be mailed to their homes this week. Our
committee Medical Leadership members have been very supportive of this
campaign.
So again I share that we are well on our way; and for
those of you who have not yet committed to this campaign, we AGAIN are
asking for your support. The campaign date will be extended and we would
like to end it by the end of January. Please feel free to call with any
questions.
Thank you and Happy Holidays to each of you.
Sincerely,
Rita J. Smith, RN
President, Riverside White Cross Alumni Association

FROM
THE PRESIDENT'S CORNER
Greetings! I'm Rita J. Smith (1966)
and
the newly elected President for 2003-2004. I'm honored to serve as
President of the Alumni, and look forward to a very exciting year.
I'm sure all of you have now received the brochure from the Foundation
describing the beautiful carved crystal sculpture named "Spirit"
that will be placed in the lobby of the new Emergency Department /
Heart Hospital. It is so beautiful, and only a world class piece of
art would be appropriate to honor our world class Riverside Methodist
/ White Cross nurses.
Many of you have already contributed, and I send a personal "Thank
you" for your kind contributions. With great pride I share
that we already have received $27,000 in contributions.
"Kudos" to the class of 1943 for the first class
contribution. I have been told that several classes are organizing
to raise at least $1,000, so that the respective class can be honored
on the pedestal base. Wouldn't it be great if every class was
recognized on the pedestal base? Be sure to enclose your year of
graduation with your contribution.
We are also encouraging the current Riverside Methodist Hospital
nurses to come together as a unit in making a group gift if preferred,
so that every unit at Riverside Methodist can be recognized on the
pedestal base.
The Medical Staff (current and retired) Campaign will formally begin
in September. However, we have already received a generous gift from
both the Medical Executive committee and the OB / GYN
Medical Staff committee.
And finally, the Riverside Methodist Hospital Volunteers have
made a generous contribution.
So, you see we are well on the way in full-filling a long-time dream
to honor the Alumni nurses, the retired nurses, and the current nurses
of White Cross Hospital and Riverside Methodist Hospital who have
worked, and do work day in and day out caring so well for our hospital
patients.
Thank you in advance for considering
this request and for giving to honor the Riverside / White Cross
spirit of nursing… past, present and future.
For additional information about this effort or if you have any
questions, please feel free to call Pam Glasgow, Director of
Development at the Grant / Riverside Methodist Hospital Foundation
at

Sincerely,
Rita J. Smith, RN 09-19-03
THE
SPIRIT OF NURSING
The nursing profession has a long and rich
history at Riverside Methodist Hospital. From the hospital’s
humble beginning in 1892, it has been the nursing workforce that has
provided the foundation for Riverside’s continued growth and expansion;
the foundation being the continued compassion and commitment for quality,
patient-focused care. And although the profession has undergone
great change, the core nursing values of dedication and compassion are
embodied in today’s Riverside nurses who care for patients and families
in the nation’s fifth busiest hospital.
The development of the new Heart Hospital
and Emergency Services at Riverside (slated for completion in Spring,
2004) and located on the former site of the White Cross/Riverside School
of Nursing has presented a unique opportunity to honor the spirit of
nursing at Riverside. A carved lead crystal sculpture,
appropriately titled "Spirit" by world-renowned artist and Ohio
State University graduate, Christopher Ries, has been selected for
placement in the lobby of the new hospital addition.
This stunning piece was selected for the
purpose of honoring the "spirit" of Riverside nurses – past,
present and future. Located on a pedestal in the lobby of the new
hospital addition, the sculpture will be a focal point for all that pass
through the building. The optical glass sculpture measures
37-1/8" x 12-1/8" x 8-3/8".
Help is needed to underwrite the costs of
purchasing and placing this commemorative work of art. The
Committee to Honor the Spirit of Nursing at Riverside is seeking to raise
$100,000 in private donations to secure the piece and a pedestal base.
Should contributions exceed the fundraising goal, any additional dollars
will be placed in the Riverside Nursing Excellence Fund to support
scholarships and continuing professional education for Riverside nurses.
We are asking for your support in making
this recognition a reality. A gift to the Spirit of Nursing at
Riverside will honor all members of the nursing profession.
Donations can be made in honor of nurses, the healthcare profession or in
memory and / or honor of loved ones and friends.
An individual or combined group gift of
$1,000 or more provides the opportunity for your name (or the name you
designate) to be placed on the pedestal of the sculpture. All gifts
must be received by Oct. 31, 2003.
Several Alumni classes have already
submitted a group gift and will have their class name / year of graduation
honored and placed on the pedestal.
For additional information about making a
gift, please call the Grant/Riverside Methodist Hospitals Foundation at
(614) 566-4483. A gift submission form is available elsewhere in
this newsletter.
CHRISTOPHER
RIES
Christopher Ries grew up on a farm in
Galloway, Ohio. After receiving a BFA in glass and ceramics from
The Ohio State University, Ries earned an MFA in glass from the University
of Wisconsin Madison (UWM).
Though initially he blew glass, by the late
1970’s he was sculpting glass cold by cutting, grinding, and polishing
it in his home studio. Some of his words are the largest, whole,
unassembled pieces of sculpted crystal known.
Christopher Ries’ innovative work is
included in many public and private collections, nationally and
internationally.
